Hytte

= cottage

To understand what a hytte really is to Norwegians, you must also know what role it plays in their lives. Many Norwegians own or rent a hytte somewhere in the country, by the seaside, in the mountains, just outside the city or far away. This is their little get-away where they'll spend weekends and vacations. Often, the hytte is in a remote place and might be without electricity or running water.

In winter, many Norwegians like to go "to the mountains" and spend their winter break and Easter break there. Upon arrival, they might need to dig out the cottage to gain access! As with all houses in Norway, the hytter are built sturdy so they won't collapse under all the snow...
