Every year, the members of The Storting, Norway's national assembly, vote and give the Peer Gynt award to a person or an institution (Peer Gynt is the main character in Henrik Ibsen's play of the same name). This person or institution must have made a significant contribution to the community and made Norway known internationally in a positive way.
This prestigious national honor prize is presented annually during the Per Gynt Festival. Former Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen was the first winner of the award in 1971.
The Per Gynt Festival features about 30 various events on 15 different locations. Theatre, literature, music and arts are central domains, all featured in an exiting collaboration between local, national and international actors, and between professionals and amateurs. Local tradition and fantastic scenery frame all the events.
