Opera

Opera started out as a research project in Norway's largest telecom company, Telenor, in 1994, and branched out into an independent development company named Opera Software ASA in 1995. Opera Software develops the Opera Web browser, a high-quality, multi-platform product for a wide range of platforms, operating systems and embedded Internet products.

1994: Jon S. von Tetzchner and Geir Ivarsøy developed a Web browser while working for the Norwegian telecom incumbent Telenor.

1995: Opera Software ASA is founded in Oslo, Norway.

1997: The first Opera, Opera 2.1 for Windows released.

2002: Opera invents SSR for user-friendly mobile web browsing.

2004: Opera listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

2005: Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software, proclaimed at an internal company meeting that if the download numbers of the new Opera 8 Web browser reach 1 million within the first four days of the launch, he would swim from Norway to the USA.

"Although I blatantly admit that my promise was based more on joy and enthusiasm than my swimming abilities and physical health, I will do my very best to keep it," he said in a statement.

But Jon von Tetzchner was stopped in his quest to swim from Norway to the USA after promising to do so. The attempt was ended when von Tetzchner’s assistant’s raft was punctured and he was forced to rescue him.

"It was cold and wet and horrible and I was really, really scared," says Eskil Sivertsen, Opera's PR Manager who operated the raft.
