About Design Awards

One of the Norwegian Design Council's main promotional activities is the annual Award for Design Excellence and the Honours Award for Design Excellence given to products and corporate identity programs. Other awards include the International Design Award, Classic Award for Design Excellence and the Young Talent Award. The closing date for submission of applications is in mid August.

Award for Design Excellence (Merket for God Design)

The Award for Design Excellence is the leading award for design in Norway. It's purpose is to stimulate the industry to use design as an important tool in product development and market communication. The Award for Design Excellence is a recognition for design quality and a visible proof that companies and designers jointly have developed a good product. Good products are distinguished by the consideration of it's functional, technical, economical and esthetical aspects, in addition to marketing and environmental considerations.
A new category for universal design - Design for All - was introduced in 2004.

The Honours Award for Design Excellence (Hedersprisen)

The Honours Award for Design Excellence is given to products that clearly distinguish themselves among those who receive the Award for Design Excellence. The award was introduced in 2000, and is the highest design award in Norway. It honours both the producer and the designer for their successful design cooperation.

International Design Award

The International Design Award is the most recent of our awards, from 2001, and is given to Norwegian designers and their foreign employers for jointly developed products. The objective of the award is to promote Norwegian design abroad and to demonstrate - on an international level - the high quality of Norwegian design.

The Classic Award for Design Excellence (Klassikerprisen)

The Classic Award for Design Excellence is awarded to products that have been in the market for at least ten years and are still commercially successful. The aim is to encourage companies to invest in design long-term. Experience shows that good design products are competitive, have longevity and give stable profit as well as offers the customer functional and aesthetically pleasing products.
